Baby boomers were a hugely influential generation of their time, but the focus has since shifted to millennials. Millennials hold a lot of influence on today’s society, just like the baby boomers before them. Below are four ways they are impacting the world of healthcare.

    Unlike previous generations, millennials are much more technologically-savvy. Having grown up with things like the Internet and cell phones, the majority see digital technology as a fact of life. With that, others will similarly rely on digital technology — doctors included. Many millennials are high-tech users of healthcare because their age group is still young and healthy. As they use healthcare facilities more though, they’re starting to demand technologically-savvy physicians that know and take advantage of the latest tech for better service. These tech solutions include online health portals, easy self-serve options, online appointment scheduling, electronic medical record review, online payment options, and digital health services.

  2. Instant Care

    Millennials are from a world where telecommuting is common, and the work day never fully ends, putting stress on the importance of every minute. Because of this, healthcare should happen quickly and efficiently. There’s no room for long wait times and slow turnaround. Millennials are twice as likely as baby boomers to prefer retail clinics and acute-care facilities for speedy and efficient healthcare delivery. Because of this, healthcare organizations need options that can compete with retail clinics.

  3. Telemedicine

    Millennials want more than just online scheduling and messaging services from their healthcare provider. They love telemedicine since they regularly use some form of video chat elsewhere in their lives, be it for social or professional needs. What’s more, 60 percent of millennials showed interest in telemedicine. This is the reason why the market for remote monitoring and telemedicine will reach $27.3 billion by the end of this year, double its size as recently as 2011.

  4. Patient-Centric Care

    Millennials use their smartphones at the office, they work from home, they use the same cloud apps both for personal and professional ends. All of this has started to lead to the consumerization of healthcare. More than 75 percent of millennials look at online reviews before selecting a physician. Word of mouth is just as important when it comes to millennials. They listen to their peers when selecting a doctor to ensure they choose a healthcare facility they can trust and one that will provide the best healthcare journey.

Baby boomers may have changed how the world worked, but millennials are changing the way consumers interact and connect with others. Healthcare is not exempt from this.
